Prednisolone
Indications/Uses
Rheumatic fever, RA, allergic diseases, nephritic syndrome, bronchial asthma & other corticosteroid-indicated conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent 5-60 mg daily in divided doses. Max dose: 250 mg daily. Acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis 200 mg daily for 1 wk followed by 80 mg every other day for 1 mth. Childn Adrenocortical insufficiency 140 mg/kg daily or 4 mg/m2 daily in 3 divided doses. Other indications 500 mcg to 2 mg/kg daily or 15-60 mg/m2 daily in 3-4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Osteoporosis, active peptic ulcer, psychoses/severe psychoneurosis. Systemic fungal infections. Acute infections unless effective. Immunizations. Adjunct treatment w/ TB drugs. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
CHF, DM, HTN, recent intestinal anastomoses, infectious diseases, uraemia, diverticulitis, myasthenia gravis, ocular herpes simplex. History of peptic ulcer or pyschotic tendencies. Monitor spinal radiographs for signs of osteoporosis. RA patients & postmenopausal women. Glaucoma. Epilepsy. W/drawal syndrome. Prolonged therapy. Hepatic cirrhosis & hypothyroidism. Chronic renal failure. Growth inhibition or arrest in childn.
Adverse Reactions
Cushing's syndrome, acne, hirsutism, osteoporosis, aseptic osteonecrosis, growth disturbances in childn, myopathy, susceptibility of infections, gastric & intestinal ulcers w/ bleeding, hyperglycemia, glaucoma, posterior subcapsular cataract, psychic disturbances, increased appetite, hypokalemia, unsual bruising wounds, cutaneous or SC tissue atrophy, hypopigmentation, dizziness or lightheadedness, face & cheeks flushing, increased sweating.
Drug Interactions
Reduced response to corticosteroids by barbiturates, phenylbutazone, phenytoin or rifampicin. Reduced response to anticoagulants & salicylates.
